T2 since a month. In need of tips!

Hello everyone! i turned 30 in May, and i've been diagnosed with T2 diabetes a month ago, in the first week of Ramadan (the muslims' fasting month). My HBA1C was around 9, and the initial BG reading 280. The doctor prescribed me meds, and was very vague on the diet (he basically handed me the diet 101 template brochure).

It was very hard for me at first as i'm a big sucker for sweets (especially chocolate/candy), and as soon as someone says "you can't eat X anymore", that's when you crave it the most. It was also a struggle to manage meal timings, as i had to have my 3 meals from 7 PM to 3 AM, so the readings were all over the place at first, even with meds (140-210). As hard as it may have been, i cut everything loose. My sweetness cravings were rapidly satisfied with fruits, and i began to eat A LOT of vegetables (my intake was minimal pre-diabetes, to say the least). BG readings began to normalize as weeks went by (90-150).

A month later (yesterday), HBA1C is 7.8. BG is usually around 90 to 125 max. Doc said i could get off meds in two months if A1C level is below 7 until then. I made progress, and that gives me motivation to continue following my diet. My typical meals now are something like :

  • Breakfast: Flavored black tea + whole wheat bread and almond butter
  • Lunch: Meat + vegetables or salad
  • Dinner: sometimes same as breakfast at 6PM, or soup or meat+vegetables at 8PM

The doc said i could treat myself with a burger/pizza once a month, and god did it felt good to stuff that pizza in my mouth! I see a lot of people here satisfying their cravings with ice cream and protein bars with very low sugar (2g). It is really okay to eat that kind of stuff, even if it's considered rapid sugars? (not that i can find that kind of stuff in my country anyway...)
