Hi /r/diabetes,
I'm writing this post for anybody thinking of getting an Omnipod insulin pump. There is a MAJOR con with this device that I wish I had known about before getting it. That is, the alarms. Total deal breaker.
If you have a social life, this pump is not for you. This device has put me in more embarrassing situations than I can count. For some reason, the pod loves to emit ear-piercing, extremely obnoxious high-pitched beeps that are impossible to avoid/disable.
Obviously I see the importance of an alert system, but this is just fucking ridiculous. Seeing as I made the decision to use this device in the first place, I should be able to disable the auditory alarms if I so choose. The PDM is capable of vibrating, so why on earth am I unable to use that as my primary method of receiving notifications?
I'm not exaggerating when I say ear-piercing. This device really does emit some of the most annoying sounds I have ever heard. This is what it sounds like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWwQXQQwi2s
Yep. You're forced to become a walking fire alarm whether you like it or not. This is not limited to just pod fails either, it also beeps when your pod is nearing expiration or low on insulin. No option to disable it. I've had this happen to me in class, during exams, and even meetings. It's mortifying.
The fact that some creature at Insulet Corporation actually sat down and designed the alarm system to be this way blows my mind. Don't get an Omnipod.
