Best Practices for Dexcom Calibration?

I've seen multiple theories on the best way to calibrate your Dexcom. Calibrate immediately; ignore it for the first two days; only calibrate when you're steady; etc.

One would think that calibrating frequently could only help, but there seems to be worry that calibrating at the wrong time can actually throw the damn thing off.

Example. Just popped a new one in. First reading: 77. Glucosemeter: 107. I calibrated. Two hours later, the Dexcom had me at 168, and the glucose meter still at 107. So I calibrated again. With the huge difference, it's now asking me for a second reading. And now I'm worried that I've monkeyed with this meter enough in the first two hours that it's going to be permanently messed up in some way...
