So my mom has been on insulin for the past 2 years (she’s been DM2 for a good 15 years, but kidney disease had her doctor putting her on insulin) with some pretty high dosages 3x a day (long acting and short acting. Don’t know their names) and recently my parents decided to go vegetarian – and just for health reasons and to lose some weight. My dad is fine and my mom’s A1C was 6.0 as of a month ago.
When my mother first told me we sorta wondered if it was a good idea because we figured a vegetarian diet would have more carbs, but she kept monitoring her glucose and since day 3 it’s been the lowest it’s ever been. The thing, she’s been having hypos almost every day. Sometimes more.
It’s kinda terrifying because it goes down to the 40s before she even starts getting the shakes and I don’t get it at all. Shouldn’t someone who’s been having more starches/fruit or just carbs in general be having highs?
She’s been adjusting her dosage (and even skipping her lunch insulin completely because her glucose has been stable with just the morning dosage) but hasn’t gotten quite right yet and I’m not sure she’ll get to see her doctor before the new year’s. Anyway, I did some googling and there’s talk about a vegan or plant based diet helping T2s, but they never actually mention insulin dependent T2 people. So what’s up, reddit? Has anyone gone through something similar? This just seems to go against everything she has been told about being diabetic.
