On Monday night my wife and I met my parents at a local restaurant for my moms birthday. A few minutes before we left I got a low cartridge warning from my pump (Animas Ping) so decided to change my infusion site. After checking my sugar (it was around 102 at 5:00) we went on to dinner. I ate (lightly fried fish and some rice) which is nothing out of the normal for me and bolused accordingly. We went back home and settled in front of the tv to watch a movie.
At a little before 9:00 I started to feel pretty nauseous so I went to check my bg. It was a little over 500. I did a correction bolus and went back to finish the movie. Once it was over I went to check my bg again before bed and it was almost 600. A little confused, I went ahead and corrected again. I mentioned it to my wife, and she said I may want to change my site. I didn’t think too much of it, thinking that with all the insulin I took over the past couple of hours it would surely come down.
I tried to lay down and go to sleep, but had to get up to go pee around 11:30. I decided to check my bg again (it was over 600 on the meter) so I went to change the site again. After changing the site I did a correction and went back to bed. I woke up around 7:00 on Tuesday with a bg reading in the 270’s.
I stayed home from work yesterday to monitor things and try to get some rest. My sugar stayed around the 200 mark for most of the day yesterday and I have been exhausted ever since.
My main reason for this post is to remind everyone to not brush off your instincts. If something doesn’t seem or feel right take the time to retrace your steps and remember the basics. If I would if inspected my site after the first high reading I might of noticed the blood around it and realized insulin was coming back out.
I was very fortunate that noting worse happened to me. I just received the Medtronic 670G pump and corresponding CGM that I will start using this week. I’m a little scared, very apprehensive, and kind of excited about starting treatment to improve my diabetes.
