Traveling with type 1 diabetes

Hi, earlier today my girlfriend was diagnosed with type 1. She's currently in a hospital bed, staying overnight on a drip. It's going to be a pretty rough night for her. She's trying not to think about it at the moment, so she can get as much rest as possible, but I know one of the things she's going to worry about regarding our future is that she has always wanted to go traveling, and this is going to make that much more difficult.

Is there any advice that type 1s or their partners here can offer? Stories of travels you've done and how you coped with taking your insulin with you, how airlines handle it etc. would be great.

We're from the UK (bless the NHS), and I know that China, Bali, Iceland and Australia are among the places she'd like to go.

It's been a long day for us and I'm heading to bed now so won't be responding to replies straight away, but thanks in advance for any answers.
