He has been T1 for just a few years, diagnosed in his 40s, and has done amazingly well managing it. He prides himself on not allowing it to dictate his life, and has kept his A1C around 6.0. He is in law enforcement and has direct contact with all newly arrested inmates. He checked with his endo and she confirmed that the risk to his health is likely greater than the general public, even with his tight blood sugar management.
His work is allowing all high risk employees to take pandemic leave for six weeks, which will be extended and needed. He doesn't have to use any of his sick time (though he has 4+ months saved up because he never uses it) or take FMLA time or anything else. Ideally, someone would have a task he can work on at home or in an isolated office somewhere, but as of today he has been told to just stay home.
He wants to be at work, he feels he is letting his team down and that there is no reason to avoid work. I told him that even if he can stay healthy for the next month so that the "peak" passes, he would be increasing his likelihood of a positive outcome if the worst happens and there are complications.
He's really angry at being diabetic right now. What could someone tell YOU that would help in this situation? I'm so sad for him, and worried about helping him get through this.
Thank you!
