In case you haven't heard of it, Symlin is the only NON-insulin medication approved for Type 1 diabetes in the US (meant to be used in conjunction with insulin). It improved insulin effectiveness and stabilizes general control. But it's a bit of a pain to use because it's injected 3x per day (with meals) and can't be mixed with insulin in the same injection.
Needless to say, most of my patients (I'm a Diabetes specialty PA) found that the hassle of adding 3 MORE injections during the day just weren't worth the benefit- If you're on basal/bolus injections, you're now getting up to 7 injections per day and if you're on a pump, you are now back to giving an injection before every meal. So it more or less fell off everybody's radar.
Well, it looks like they might have finally figured out how to develop a combination of Symlin and insulin in the same solution so that they can be used with a single injection. It'll be years before clinical trials are done and the FDA/international regulatory authorities approve the stuff, but it's an exciting glimpse into the future of options in diabetes management. I am curious if anyone is still using the stuff and if this is as intriguing to you as it is to me.
