Adjusting to lower blood sugar levels?

Hi all -- my husband was told that he was prediabetic months ago before the pandemic picked up. The VA gave him some medication (I'm not sure which, I think metformin) and an Accu-chek to monitor his levels. I started to get an inkling a few days ago that he hadn't been monitoring it nor managing his diet and I asked him to take his levels. It came back at 394. So we've been working hard on diet for the last few days and now he's around the low 200s. However, he's been experiencing dizziness and the general symptoms that accompany low blood sugar. I assume that it's his body adjusting to these new lower levels even though they are still high.

I was wondering what other's experiences were with this? How long did it last? Is there a way to alleviate some of his symptoms? He also has PTSD and the sudden feeling of dizziness or lightheadedness triggers panic and he hurries to go lie down. He currently doesn't feel safe driving or going anywhere. I'm just hoping for some potential pointers on if there's anything I can do to help with these symptoms and what range of time we might be looking at him experiencing this. I"m even wondering if it might help to stabilize him at this level for a little while before working on dropping it more again.

He does have an appointment with the VA but they can't see him for about 2 weeks while they work on their backlog of appointments. We're both very new to this world and while we wait for medical advice I was hoping you guys might have some pointers to get us through.
