Proactive health management?

My dad (in his mid 50s) was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, partially caused by genetic predisposition, which suggests I may be predisposed as well. I'm only 18 (male), but I want to make sure keep things in check. What are some general good practices I can follow to reduce the likelihood of this becoming a problem later on in my life?
