Dignity at the eye doctor?

I’m not sure if I’m overreacting to this situation. I left my annual eye exam extremely upset and embarrassed yesterday.

I have had type 2 diabetes for 3 years and this has never been an issue. Yesterday, after signing the paperwork, the receptionist calls me up to the desks and asks me if I’m a diabetic. I was polite and informative. I’m sure she asked due to the fact that I would need to be dilated rather than have the optimap. However, she then whispered about me behind a clipboard right in front of my face to the employee who looks at you before the optometrist. While again, I’m sure this was not ill intentioned, I feel like this could have been handled differently.

As for the exam, I felt it was very rushed. The optometrist referred to me as “a diabetic” more than he said my name. We spent more time discussing me being having diabetes rather than the actual eye exam. Mind you, my diabetes is well managed and there were no issues with my eye pressure. In fact, I am having no diabetes related issues with my eyes.

While escorting me out, the optometrist says “Have a good day, and take care of that diabetes.” I’m not sure but this whole experience put me in a bad mood. I didn’t even purchase eyeglasses because I was so upset and embarrassed. The system automatically made me another appointment and I am going to call Monday to cancel it and likely go to another eyecarecenter. Should I tell them about my experience? Or am I just overly sensitive?
