I stopped using my insulin pump a week ago, and my results got better. A lot better.

I’m a type 1, male 60’s, in good health. My last A1c three months ago was 6.3. I’m physically active, and walk or run every day for at least an hour.

A week ago my pump, Omnipod, fell off due to excessive sweating in the summer heat. I decided to leave it off and take a break from it for a while.

I switched to MDI for basil with Tresiba, and bolus with Novorapid. For at least the past year or so, I’ve been relying on Tresiba for most of my basil delivery, in addition to the pump, so I could get three days of use out of my pump before running out of Novorapid. (I otherwise typically use more insulin in three days than the pump will hold.)

Anyway, after a week of MDI, my average was 5.8 versus my 90 day average of 6.9, and my results are rock steady and predictable. No ski slopes or Mount Everest graphs on my Freestyle Libre scanner. I’m not completely sure why this is happening, but I’ve got some theories:

  1. Tresiba does a better job at delivering a steady basil supply than a continuous drip of Novorapid via the pump.
  2. Bolus delivery is not always 100% successful because the cannula gets dislodged or clogged.

Anyway, I’m not sure what to do going forward. I didn’t intend to get off the pump, but honestly, it seems easier, and I have better results.

Thoughts? Has anyone else seen similar results?
