Over the moon - I got the Freestyle Libre!

Hi! I am A and today I got the Freestyle Libre!

Not sure how it works anywhere else, but in the UK to get the Libre on the NHS, you have to average >8 finger prick tests per day for around 6 weeks to make it cost effective and qualify for the Libre. Two weeks ago I passed the Libre Academy and last week I signed my contract as I’d averaged 9.3 tests per day for 6 weeks.

I am over the moon... here’s a little about me and my diabetes and why the Libre will help!

I was diagnosed nearly 15 years ago and for a majority of that time I was in denial, rebelling and suffering from diabulimia.

I hit DKA many times over the years and the scariest one came whilst I was studying at university. I was told that I was 4 hours from dying. After going through this, I decided to inject enough insulin to keep me alive. It wasn’t until a couple of months ago that I decided to take my T1D seriously.

In the past 6 months I have turned my diabetes management around. I started taking my insulin doses properly, correct my highs and test more often - I am so glad I did. I feel healthier already and getting the Libre is going to make life so much easier!

Recently I achieved a HbA1C of 72 which is the first time I’ve been below 100 in 6 years! And the lowest I’ve EVER been. Hopefully the Libre will help me to pull it down more.

There’s still a long way to go and a lot that I want to improve on, but I am looking forward to facing the journey with the support of my amazing friends and the Diabetic Community that I have found on Instagram and hopefully here on Reddit too!

TLDR: I got the Libre today on NHS by finally getting on track with my testing after 10 years of neglecting my diabetes management
