Serum Fructosamine test

From what I've read, this test is generally used to test women who have gestational diabetes, and measures BG control over the 2-3 weeks preceding the test. There is a formula to convert Serum Fructosamine values to an estimated A1c value, which is: (Serum Fructosamine x .017) + 1.61.

I'm not pregnant, but my doctor wanted to see how my current dosage of Metformin was working, to determine whether I need more. Spoiler alert: she decided not to up my dose.

When I was diagnosed about six weeks ago, my A1c was measured at 10.1. My fasting BG in the mornings was >300 consistently. Now, owing to Metformin and radical dietary changes, my fasting BG in the mornings is in the 130-150 range, and between 90-130ish at other points during the day.

But get this: my Serum Fructosamine a couple days ago was 185 which is a below normal value, with normal being 190-270, and supposedly corresponds to an A1c of 4.75! Good news, but also weird, because according to my BG meter, that is an artificially low value.

Unless the test has a really really wide margin of error.

Does anyone have any insights?
