My doc wants me to start taking a statin now that I've been diagnosed T2. Mind you, my total cholesterol is only 161. Triglycerides were elevated on my most recent metabolic panel because my BG was still elevated (but BG is pretty consistently <130 on average now). She said the statins are a preventive because the T2 increases my risk of heart disease. But isn't that only true if my BG is not well controlled?
I'm not too excited about taking statins because 1) it's another damn drug and I don't want to take pills unless they are absolutely necessary; 2) the side effects (flu-like symptoms) would pretty much nix any progress I've made on the exercise front; and 3) they are freaking expensive and my insurance is shit.
