Need to do a quick rant about people's misunderstanding of diabetes

I was talking to a friend over Skype last night and mentioned I just had a bowl of ice cream. His wife heard and made some surprised comment about that. My friend responded with "oh I'm sure it was sugar free". I told them it wasn't but it was fine because I had taken insulin. His wife said sarcastically "well that's a healthy way of looking at it".

This really made my (120 BG) blood boil. The implication is that I should only eat sugar free foods and that taking insulin to eat some ice cream is somehow a more unhealthy decision than a non diabetic eating ice cream. I fucking hate when people judge what I'm eating or feel like they need to comment on it. You don't know my disease better than I do. And if you're not my doctor or immediate family member you have no place commenting on my dietary choices.

The other annoying thing is I've had dinner at their house before and they've served me a heaping pile of rice, which will make my BG shoot up much worse than a single bowl of ice cream.

Why does everybody think they're experts in diabetes when they probably can't even tell the difference between a carb and a calorie? I don't expect people to be experts but I expect them to keep their mouths shut if they aren't. I don't tell people with epilepsy how to manage their disease.
