I have Diabetic retinopathy

As the title suggests, I got some bad news recently. I’m 23 and have always maintained what I thought was good control of my diabetes. My HB1Cs were good but not great and I honestly thought I had okay control.

A few months ago I started seeing a blur in my vision and pretty much knew what it would be straight away and went to the doctors. She told me that she saw no other symptoms for retinopathy so ran some tests but low and behold there it was.. I’ve been told it’s very mild and reversible but need to keep good control. I was quite upset but she said “most people would be happy they didn’t have an infection” but all I heard was that I was 23 and had fucked up.

Unfortunately I thought I was already keeping good control. So here’s my question - how do I keep on top of things without over testing and over doing it? She said I needed to be stable and I’ve been testing my bloods obsessively which I don’t wanna do cause I only get so many testing strips a month.

Just need some help and advise from a community I think? I don’t know anyone else that has it (that has good control anyway)
