Bionic Pancreas Update

Hi all!

I wanted to let everyone know that I got an email today with more detail about what will be happening during the study. As I mentioned, it's a small study, and they'll only be choosing 18 people. It's scheduled for September, so they're looking to secure participants within the next few weeks.

So this is the basic gist of the study:

  • Week one: Using the "pancreas" with Humalog or Novolog.
  • Week two: Using the "pancreas" with Fiasp, the faster acting Novolog.
  • Week three: One week of your usual care, where you manage your own diabetes and wear the study CGM.
  • Week four: Post-Study Transition period: 2 days where you follow the "pancreas'" recommended insulin doses for you instead of your usual care.

The CGM that will be used for the study is the implantable Senseonics Eversense. It can be kept under your skin for 90 days at a time, and only your physician (or a physician) can implant it for you. When implanting it, you are given general anesthesia to your upper arm, a small cut is made in your skin, then the device is stuck in there and you are sutured up.

The CGM will work with the "pancreas" to automatically test your sugar at any given time and will give you insulin as needed. As far as I know, there is not a chamber for glucagon or something similar to correct lows YET. However, it's still early in the study, so they may very well be working toward that.

I told them that I was still interested, so we'll see what happens!! :)
