Hello there. Recently diagnosed T1 here, enjoying a very strong honeymoon period, good insulin sensitivity, and eating a very low-carb diet, using no fast-acting insulin. As a result, my blood sugars are generally very even and smooth and consistent. Very few unaccountable rises and falls. And because of all that, I can more easily perceive the effect of incremental changes in my regimen.
Lantus has a 28 day shelf life. Having just completed my third vial, I can state that my glucose during the last week of the old vial is reliably some 5-10 points higher than it is during the first week of the new vial. Just using a fresh vial of insulin takes me from a daily average of ~102 to ~95.
I'm not sure what to do with this knowledge - I take such a small amount that adding even one more unit might be a bad idea. But it's happening.
Has anyone else noticed this? Does anyone change their dosage as the month goes on? Who goes far beyond 28 days, and what effect does that have?
