Currently in icu with my mother (age 57) due to dka .

Hey everyone , new to the sub as this our families first time experiencing dka . have a few questions as I’ve been reading a ton of info online and a lot of clinical studies . First I’ll give a little background: Last Sunday my mom was sent to er for bg of 450 , gave her insulin/ iv and she was in and out of er in roughly 4 hours . Prior to calling the ambulance she began shaking uncontrollably and vomiting . She was away at my little brothers baseball tournament roughly 2 hours from where we live and dad and other parents called 911 as she couldn’t control her shakes . doctors didn’t test ph as she’s type 2 and they were able to get her glucose down relatively quickly . She was talking and responsive at the doctors then slept the car ride home . Monday night I came to visit her at their house around 5:30 pm and she was asleep, I checked her breathing and she just seemed peaceful so I let her rest and thought nothing of it ( doctors never gave any signs of what to look for or even mentioned dka. Never heard of it prior to this experience ) Tuesday morning I get a call from my dad around 9am saying moms in the hospital she threw up around 2 am and then around 630-7am was having trouble speaking and almost fell down . . He drove her to er and arrived around 7:45 -8am . By the time I got the call and arrived she was hooked up to ivs insulin and an oxygen mask . Breathing was extremely labored as if she was struggling for every breath. Heart rate was 137 (continued like this for 16 hours when it started lowering ) blood pressure was very high(can’t recall the number ) and her ph level was 6.8 which I found out a day later from the doctor was the lowest he’s ever seen in 20 years of practice . Potassium was low, phosphorous was low , hc03 was at a 4 ? Supposed to be around 22? We were told she was dehydrated down to the cellular level . So they were able to get majority of her chemical levels back up to normal ranges . Potassium is the last to hit normal range and we are on day 4 at icu . Just drew blood to test again at 5:40 am . She also experienced chest pains yesterday morning around 5am so they ran an ekg and it was clear but they also did a cardiac enzyme test and it came back at .24 and the second one at .17 third at . 08 however they’re still concerned and planning on doing a stress test on Saturday morning . My questions and concerns are could a stress test be too much on her in her current state . What risks are involved after everything she’s been through. Also after she makes it out of this whole ordeal is she more susceptible to any organ failure or future heart problems ? I read in a study that was conducted in Scotland a few years back that mortality rate following dka was almost as high as 35% within 5 years . Just scared shitless of all this and any information or thoughts would be helpful . I’ve been staying up through the night from about 9pm-6am just watching her vitals on the screen and helping her whenever she needs it . Not sure if I mentioned but she has type 2 diabetes. She has been taking metformen for the last 3 years but never checked her glucose levels . ... I know I was dumbfounded when i heard that as well. This is also the first time I was aware she had/r/
