We've certainly come a long way in treatment, that's for sure. But some of our diabetic "newbies" may not realize how far we've come. Since my diagnosis, there are several things that used to be normal, but may have changed that have made treatment, and life in general, so much better. I was diagnosed in 1991, so here are some of my observations.
This is meant to be humorous, so have fun with it!
1) Exchanges. Don't miss that crap.
2) Lack of nutritional information on all food.
3) Testing used to have a 45 second timer.
4) What's a CGM?
5) What's a pump?
6) Normal and NPH insulin. There was a 70/30, but that stuff was weird and you could just mix your own.
7) You could put regular in your NPH, but not the other way around.
8) What's an insulin pen?
9) The cure is 5 years away.
10) Probably still using the same lancet from diagnosis... /jk
11) Disposing of used needles in a metal coffee can, taping it up when it was full, then tossing it into the garbage.
