Been a diabetic for 14 years. Elevated my blood sugar purposely for a fasting blood draw. Doctor calls back to say my blood sugar indicates "prediabetes or diabetes."

I always find this funny. I see an endo for my diabetes and a general physician for my yearly physicals. He's aware of the diabetes but he doesn't help me manage it - that's my endo's job. Still, he orders a general blood test and it requires 12 hours of fasting.

Every time I fast, I try to keep my sugars a bit elevated because if they go low, then I have to do my blood draw another day and I can't accept that! If I make a plan to do a fasting blood draw, I'm gonna make sure it happens. This time, I was 150 and going down at midnight so I was getting nervous and I put on a temporary basal. I admit, it was a bit extreme and my sugar was 200 in the morning but I could get my blood test!

The office receives my results and calls me back, saying everything is normal except my blood sugar and A1C. My sugar "should be between 70-99" and my A1C (which was 6.9 and that's pretty good for me - my endo wants me under 7.0) was "higher than normal and indicates prediabetes or diabetes."

This happens every time, like they forget I'm diabetic. Just a funny call to tell the nurses that I'm quite okay with my one-off 200 blood sugar in the morning and that my 6.9 A1C is exactly where my doctor wants me and that I'm already diabetic so their indications are very right. The last time, my sugar was 158, which is exactly what I want for a fasting blood draw and they had the same conversation.

My general physician is very good, but I'm not sure he totally understands the diabetes world.
