So I just reached my third month of being diagnosed with type 1, and for the third time since then I've been told a variation of "well, I guess you shouldn't have drank all that soda then, har har har!" by various people.
Look, I'm proud of myself. I've been almost maniacally diligent about carb counting, exercise, keeping up with doctors, the works. I'm at peace with my body and I feel like I'm taking my diagnoses in stride.
But by god, I know I shouldn't care about what other people think, but every time someone asks why I need insulin or what my cgm is, only to get a glib response from them of the "you deserved it" flavor, I just get knocked down a few pegs.
What's your approach? How do you explain it to people already set in the stigma?
